Which scientist is credited with discovering the atomic nucleus?

Ernest Rutherford

The essential idea is that atoms have a very small, dense center—the nucleus—that carries most of the atom’s mass and positive charge. This conclusion came from Rutherford’s gold foil experiment. When a beam of alpha particles struck a thin gold foil, most particles went straight through, but some were deflected at large angles, and a few even bounced back. If the old plum-pudding model were correct, these alpha particles should have passed with only minor deflections. The observed large deflections show there’s a tiny, concentrated mass and positive charge in a small region, not spread out through the atom. That led to the nuclear model of the atom, with electrons orbiting around a central nucleus.

Ernest Rutherford is credited with this nucleus discovery. Later developments, like Bohr’s idea of quantized electron orbits, Chadwick’s discovery of the neutron, and de Broglie’s matter-wave concept, expanded and refined atomic theory, but the identification of the nucleus itself comes from Rutherford’s experiment.
